What an absolute privilege it was for dancers from our Gifford Dance Professional Programme to meet Richard Alston himself on Saturday on what was an historic day to remember! The very last performance of the Richard Alston Dance Company at The Place in London where it all began. The finest contemporary choreographer of our time, was one of the first students at The Place and has remained a fixture there ever since. We were treated to some of his early works as well as some of his latest choreography too. Alston trained with Merce Cunningham in New York back in the 70's along with his fellow student (at the time) Siobhan Davies, who performed a solo (in her 70's) using the Cunningham technique and we felt honoured to have the opportunity to be included. It was wonderful to meet him.
